Swansea’s student areas sit within a couple of miles of each other, but they feel different to live in. We let houses in six of them. Here’s the honest guide to choosing.
Brynmill – the classic
The student heartland: terraced streets between Singleton Park and the sea, a few minutes’ walk from Singleton campus. The most student-filled of all the areas – your neighbours are your coursemates. Houses go earliest here. Best for: Singleton students who want the full student-street experience.
Uplands – the lively one
Just north of Brynmill, with the best strip of independent cafes, bars and the Saturday market. Slightly more mixed than Brynmill – students alongside young professionals – and still an easy walk to campus. Best for: groups who rate coffee, nightlife and a bit of buzz on the doorstep.
Sandfields – the seafront value
Between the city centre and the beach, with the prom at the end of the road. Closer to town than Brynmill, often friendlier on the budget, and a short ride to Singleton. Best for: groups who want beach and city in equal measure.
City Centre – on top of everything
Shops, transport, nightlife and food on your doorstep, with buses to both campuses. Flats and smaller shares are more common than big terraced houses. Best for: smaller groups, and anyone splitting time between the two campuses.
St Thomas – across the river
Just east of the city centre, over the Tawe, with the SA1 waterfront and the marina on one side and Kilvey Hill on the other. A walk into town over the bridge, and a straight run along Fabian Way to the Bay Campus. Usually gentler on the budget than the west side. Best for: Bay Campus students, and anyone who wants the city centre close by without living in the middle of it.
Port Tennant – the Bay Campus neighbour
East of the centre with quieter streets and easy reach of the Bay Campus along Fabian Way. Often the best value of all. Best for: Bay Campus students who’d rather walk or cycle to lectures than cross the city.
How to actually choose
Pick by campus first (Singleton students look west, Bay students look east), budget second, personality third – then view houses in two areas before deciding. The right house in your second-choice area usually beats the wrong house in your first.
